Telluride Regional Airport Runway Improvement Update

The airport is currently open for business, and the only scheduled closure this summer will be from August 17th through August 21st to complete the paving for the new parallel taxiway and the runway overruns.

Phase III Update

Phase III of the runway/safety area project is underway from May 1st through November 1st 2010. Phase III will complete all the necessary physical runway and safety area improvements to increase the Airport’s runway design category from B-III to D-III. Once these improvements have been completed, the FAA will design and publish new Cat C & D instrument approaches over the next 18 months.

Phase III includes the installation of the Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) at each end of the runway, and widen the safety areas on each side of the runway to 250 feet from runway centerline. These two safety improvements, combined with last year’s runway reconstruction that reduced the runway gradient will greatly enhance the safety of the runway environment.

This summer, the Airport will also be adding a new 1500-gallon Aircraft Rescue & Firefighting vehicle to its emergency response equipment.
